We had Fat Albert, Sanford and Sons and even disgraced Bill Cosby on the airwaves. Was Frank's Place so different that it turned out so unpopular amongst the audiences that kept Martin, etc. I can't help but think that it was because nobody was interested in a black sitcom back then. There was an episode about moving a body out of a funeral home for his last hurrah with his friends at a bar and another one about an exclusive "black" club that used a "brown paper bag test" to admit worthy African Americans of particular parentage (i.e. It aired after my last year of college in '87 and I don't recall much about it other than it was smart, well-written and hysterical. It starred Tim Reid (Venus Flytrap from WKRP in Cincinatti) and his wife Daphne Maxwell Reid who took over the cuckoo's spot as the mom on the Fresh Prince of BelAir. And it gave us the greatest blooper of all time, Barbara Rush, telling Morgan Fairchild, who played her daughter Constance, "Constance, if I could remember my lines, I would say them to you." by Anonymousįrank's Place, a sitcom which lasted for only 22 episodes. The first year, it was an un-dramatic crap-fest, which was much more watchable. The second season they brought in David Selby to ruin the show. They might as well have turned the show into a musical.Ī show that suffered a similar fate was "Flamingo Road," featuring "young actor" Mark Harmon. The show had potential to be a hit, but when they brought in Vanessa, they were just rolling the dice.
The other reason was that, in a fit of stunt-casting (think Heather Locklear in "Melrose Place," Joan Collins in "Dynasty," or that little runt in "Family Matters," they brought in Vanessa Williams in the second season. The primary reason was that McDonough's character's arc really ended in the first season, leading to him cleaning up his act and removing the most dramatic element of the show. It featured Donnie Wahlberg and Neal McDonough, whose character (an assistant D.A., if I recall correctly) had a fascinating storyline dealing with his alcoholism. "Boomtown" was a remarkable show about cops in L.A.
